Position Overview

Akiya Hayama International School (AHIS) seeks a passionate and reflective specialist to design and lead a foundational program that equips students with essential life skills.
While the role includes high-quality physical education, it intentionally extends into health literacy, emotional regulation, interpersonal development, safety, and wellbeing. We are looking for someone who believes that resilience, communication, self-awareness, and physical competence are not add-ons, but foundational to meaningful learning and thriving.
Given AHIS’s emphasis on nature-based learning and outdoor experiences, the ideal candidate will have a genuine appreciation for nature and interest in incorporating outdoor movement and exploration into student learning.
This role is initially structured as part-time, with the possibility of expanding into a full-time position depending on the candidate’s interests and the evolving needs of the school.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Design & Teaching

  • Co-design and teach an integrated physical education, health/wellbeing curriculum that incorporates outdoor and experiential activities 

  • Deliver high-quality physical education that builds coordination, strength, teamwork, and confidence

  • Use movement, play, and outdoor exploration as tools for building resilience and confidence

  • Design developmentally appropriate lessons that support both physical competence and wellbeing, such as:

  • Sleep, nutrition, and personal hygiene

  • Emotional regulation and mental wellbeing

  • Interpersonal relationships and communication

  • Digital safety and responsible technology use

  • Basic first aid and risk awareness

Whole-Child & Community Focus

  • Support students in developing self-awareness, agency, and reflective habits

  • Collaborate with homeroom teachers and specialist teachers to embed wellbeing practices into daily learning

  • Help create a school-wide culture where health, safety, and emotional intelligence are explicitly taught and modeled

Ideal Candidate Profile
  • Experience teaching Physical Education and/or PSHE / health education /coaching

  • Strong understanding of child development and social-emotional learning

  • Confident facilitating discussions about wellbeing, relationships, and safety in age-appropriate ways

  • Comfortable working outdoors and integrating movement into learning

  • Love of nature and interest in using outdoor environments as part of student wellbeing and physical development

  • Reflective, warm, and relationship-driven

  • Interested in building a program from the ground up

  • Values interdisciplinary collaboration
